The child transgenderism craze has begun to recede, largely thanks to legal, financial and political pressure from the Trump administration. Yet a critical piece of the story is only now coming to light. As I show in a new report for Do No Harm, state and federal taxpayers have long been co-opted into encouraging boys and girls to try to become something they aren’t and can never be. Through public funding for state education and healthcare programs, taxpayers are unwittingly complicit in physically harming vulnerable children.
The Trump administration has highlighted part of this dismal picture, proposing a rule to end federal Medicaid payments for so-called gender-affirming care for children. Yet a significant amount of taxpayer funding for pretreatment promotion occurs at the state level. Taxpayers are not only paying for irreversible and dangerous treatments for children through Medicaid. They are also funding the state-run programs that encourage children down the gender-ideology path in the first place.
